This is what MT-CONNECT and MedTech Summit 2018 have to offer.
Industrial Design and Medical Technology
Developments in medical technology directly affect a medical practitioner's job. They cause changes to healthcare processes and requirements and have wide-reaching effects for patients and for our society. In this changing environment, the job profile for industrial designers is also being reshaped.
The challenge of designing medical devices and systems goes beyond purely formal aesthetic questions. Medical equipment demands high standards in terms of usability, hygiene and quality; treatment processes must be designed and optimised from the perspective of both the consulting practitioner and the patient. Best practice examples from dental medicine make it clear that it is vital to integrate knowledge from other fields (sociology, psychology, ergonomics, philosophy) into the design of medical technology.
The social and technological developments of the future will demand even more industrial design expertise. The increase in networked components makes holistic system development crucial: it will be necessary to combine knowledge about treatment processes, user interfaces, data standards, and data security in order to reconcile humans and technology. This will be illustrated using an example scenario for future dental medicine.
