German Aerospace Center (DLR) - Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics
The Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics develops a wide array of robots to enable humans to interact more safely and efficiently with their surrounding environments. The robots are designed to act in surroundings inaccessible or dangerous to humans as well as to support humans in everyday life and work. At the MT-Connect the Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics presents the following projects in medical robotics and prosthetics:
- VITA: The Virtual Therapy Arm VITA makes it possible for patients with amputations of the upper limbs to perform a mirror therapy in order to alleviate phantom limb pain and to learn how to control intelligent robotic prostheses. Thereby the patients are able to fill in the waiting time for a customized prosthesis.
- Helmholtz MIRO Innovation Lab: The MIRO Innovation Lab (MIL) is an open innovation lab in the field of medical robotics. Funded by the Helmholtz Association with the goal to support cooperative research in medical robotics, it enables close collaboration between the Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics of the German Aerospace Center (DLR), clinical partners, participating industrial partners, and other research institutions. In particular, the MIL offers companies without their own expertise in medical robotics access to the necessary technology and know-how, allowing them to enter this growing market.
