Innovative multi-layer Parylene coatings for active implantable medical devices
This presentation will introduce an innovative multilayer technology based on Parylene and oxide materials that is considered as the most promissing encapuslation method in the framework of miniaturization and IOT applications.
Active implantable medical devices have a promising future but key safety issues must be resolved. Examples of AIMD includes: deep brain stimulator, active implantable drug administration, retinal implants etc… These implantable medical devices must be able to withstand the corrosive environment of the human body more than 1 year without adverse consequences. In this context, device designers are always looking for a performant coating that can increase the hermeticity. Among many packaging technology, Parylene coating seems to be the best solution. The Chlorinated derivative known as Parylene C is often chosen as protective coating for medical devices thanks to its excellent chemical and biological resistance, biocompatibility and dielectric properties. For long term implant or when thickness need to be as thin as possible, Parylene alone cannot give the required barrier performance. The technology that has been developed by Comelec aims to overcome this limitation by combining Parylene with a high barrier inorganic layer such as SiOx or AlyOx. Thanks to the synergetic effect of both layers, a thin multilayer conformal coating with a few order of magnitude better than a classical Parylene. For example, in standard conditions a multilayer can decrease by a factor 100 the permeability to water vapour. This presentation will give an overview of this promising technology by presenting some process key features and results obtain on test samples.
